He’s old. He’s dirty. He’s dead. But that hasn’t stopped the
most gleefully raunchy member of the Wu Tang Clan from releasing Osirus, an odds-and-mostly-sods mix featuring material
recorded during the 10-year span preceding his passing. Rushed into posthumous
production by Ol’ Dirty’s mother and former manager, this Mixtape lacks the frenetic energy of 1995’s Return
to the 36 Chambers and the genre-bending
creativity of 1999’s Nigga Please;
post-prison Dirty sounds a beat slow and a bit sleepy, especially on the
unimaginative “F*ck Y’all” and “P*ssy Keep Calling,” an X-rated jaunt into the
mind of a bloated sex addict. Happily, “Dirty Run” finds him back in maniacal
form, boastfully barking, shouting and crooning over a looped sample of David
Bowie’s “Fame.” But only the Mark Ronson-produced “Dirty Dirty” recalls vintage
ODB, as the Brooklyn Zoo MC eagerly invites listeners to “eat my ass and have a
Coke with that!” Bless his soul.
