Another boldly envisioned love story from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind director Michel Gondry, The Science
of Sleep is a surreal journey through the fertile mind of Stéphane (Gael García Bernal), an aspiring artist whose waking
life is never easily distinguishable from his vivid dreams. If you’re looking for a linear narrative, you won’t
find it here: Gondry’s film is a vibrant collage of abstract fantasies and gleeful absurdity, and yet it culminates
in a tale of conflicted passion that somehow retains heartbreaking power. Charlotte Gainsbourg (21 Grams) makes the
most of her breakthrough role as the frustrated object of Stéphane’s desperate desire; Alain Chabat is hilarious as
a self-proclaimed ladies man whose idea of romance is an anonymous blow job. This is one of the year’s best films.
